HOC Oxford Ride the County!
Thirteen of us met up at The H Cafe, including one new member and a possible new recruit, in glorious weather to take part in the Ride the County charity event in aid of the Oxon/Bucks/Berks Air Ambulance. The idea was to visit three prearranged points in each of the counties where you were greeted and got your sponsorship form signed.
The first stop was Nelsons Diner, near Newbury, a place we frequent now and again and it was a surprise to be greeted by a staff member who said “You must be Ted and the HOC, we were expecting you”. Bacon butties and a cuppa were the order of the day before setting off to On Yer Bike near Aylesbury. We took in some nice roads going through picturesque villages on the way! Once again, when I mentioned my name at the control point, they were aware we were the HOC……Paul Long, the event organiser, had certainly done his bit promoting our club! We stopped for a while looking at bikes whilst munching a burger.
I decided to leave out the Flowing Spring, the Oxfordshire point, as it meant riding through Reading….not a good idea when trying to keep a group together…so we elected to make our way to the finish at Carterton FC which is in Oxon so three counties covered!
We got a warm welcome by Paul and his organisers upon arrival, which was nice. Most of us stayed for a while but decided not to stay for the evening event.
In all it was very well organised and I will certainly be doing it again next year, it’s a worthwhile cause at the end of the day!
